WW28: TRICKED

WW28 book offering: Tricked by Kevin Hearne

It was a rough, dry country, covered in red rocks and infrequent attempts by plant life to make a go of it.

I think one of the things that makes reading Kevin Hearne a pleasurable pastime is the descriptive way he tells a story…

About Tricked:

Druid Atticus O’Sullivan hasn’t stayed alive for more than two millennia without a fair bit of Celtic cunning. So when vengeful thunder gods come Norse by Southwest looking for payback, Atticus, with a little help from the Navajo trickster god Coyote, lets them think that they’ve chopped up his body in the Arizona desert.

But the mischievous Coyote is not above a little sleight of paw, and Atticus soon finds that he’s been duped into battling bloodthirsty desert shapeshifters called skinwalkers. Just when the Druid thinks he’s got a handle on all the duplicity, betrayal comes from an unlikely source. If Atticus survives this time, he vows he won’t be fooled again. Famous last words.

WW28: SEIZURE

WW28 book offering: Seizure by Kathy Reichs and Brendan Reichs

“Just hear me out!” I shouted.

“I don’t wanna!” Shelton whined. “You’ll start talking, and pretty soon we’ll all start nodding, and then the next thing you know, I’m hang gliding off the Eiffel Tower at midnight being chased by ninja vampires. No deal!”

By the way there are no vampires in this book. And that sentence is not anywhere near page 28 at all, but it’s my favourite, so it gets posted 🙂

About Seizure:

Ever since Tory Brennan and her friends rescued Cooper, a kidnapped wolf pup with a rare strain of canine parvovirus, they’ve turned from regular kids into a crime-solving pack. But now the very place that brought them together – the Loggerhead Island Research Institute – is out of funding and will have to shut down. That is, unless the Virals can figure out a way to save it.

So when Tory learns of an old Charleston legend about a famous she-pirate, Anne Bonney, whose fortune was never found, she can’t believe her luck – buried treasure is exactly what she needs to save the Institute on Loggerhead! Trouble is, she and her friends aren’t the only ones looking for it. And this time, the Virals’ special powers may not be enough to dig them out of trouble . . .

WW28: THE KNIFE OF NEVER LETTING GO

WW28 book offering: The Knife Of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness

I will be a man soon and men do not run in fear but I give Manchee a little push and we walk even a little faster than before, giving the Mayor’s House as wide a curve as possible till we’re past it and on the gravel path that leads on towards our house.

That sentence embodied the fear and troubles of a thirteen-year-old boy which is the crux of the matter in the story…

About The Knife Of Never Letting Go:

Prentisstown isn’t like other towns. Everyone can hear everyone else’s thoughts in an overwhelming, never-ending stream of Noise. Just a month away from the birthday that will make him a man, Todd and his dog, Manchee — whose thoughts Todd can hear too, whether he wants to or not — stumble upon an area of complete silence. WW28: LIFELESS

WW28 book offering: Lifeless by Mark Billingham

It was a forty-minute tube ride home from St. James’ Park.

Now, that sentence don’t tell us anything!! For those of you who have read this book, is this book really this boring?! Or did I just hit the motherlode of boring sentences??

About Lifeless:

In Lifeless, Mark Billingham’s Tom Thorne reaches something like the nadir of his police career, broken by the death–possibly the murder–of his demented father and shuffled off to a desk job of infinite tedium. When someone starts kicking the London homeless to death, he suggests going undercover, and those of his friends who care about him worry that he is looking for his own destruction as much as for the killer. Certainly Thorne finds compensations on the street for danger, cold, hunger and squalor–his friendship with two young addicts is nonetheless real for his deceit and their pragmatic ruthlessness. Yet the secret of the deaths he is investigating lies only partly in London’s dark alleys and corners; it lies as well fourteen years in the past on the road to Baghdad… This is probably Billingham’s best thriller yet–inventive and passionate and full of commitment and dark humour. In his vulnerability and shrewdness, Tom Thorne is gradually shaping up into a classic detective whose habit of breaking the rules is not so much a strength as part of a pattern of self-destructive behaviour. Billingham’s writing gets better with each book, too–the rough tenderness for each other of Spike and Caz, Thorne’s mildly deranged guides to the street, is delicate and moving. —Roz Kaveney

WW28: KING’S WRATH

WW28 book offering: King’s Wrath by Fiona McIntosh

Loethar sighed. “It’s complicated. In short, the death of my child and my belief that my wife murdered my mother conspired to make me want to get away from the castle. In order to do so I brought our mother’s ashes to my half-borther, whom I suspected was considering rising up against me. Now I know that those suspicions were right.

I think that is the bottomline of the story of this book…

About King’s Wrath:

The thrilling conclusion to the breathtaking saga of power, blood, birthright, and enchantment.

The barbarian King Loethar may have gained his throne through brutality and bloodshed, but he has ruled Penraven with unexpected wisdom. Now his innumerable past sins threaten his reign–as Valisars who escaped slaughter prepare to rise up. Loyalties shift and new alliances are formed as the truth of history begins to emerge.

King-in-exile Leonel hungers for revenge against the man he considers the usurper of his throne. Yet Leo is unaware of another who wields the enchantment he covets–the once-charming “halfwit” brother Piven, now a powerful youth whose exceptional cunning is matched only by his ruthless desire for the throne.

But the efforts of all three to hold or gain control of Penraven may well be in vain, for the true inheritor of the Valisar Legacy is being called home . . . to claim her crown.
