Besides the dream of seeing your book in print, one thing so many authors daydream about is what the cover will look like. I come from an artistic background. My grandmother was a watercolorist, and I actually spent time in college as an art major before switching first to forensic pathology (don’t ask—it obviously didn’t last) and eventually English. As someone who’s visual, I was excited and, to be honest, nervous for what Month9Books would come up with as the design for the cover of A MURDER OF MAGPIES.
Georgia McBride asked for my input, which I know is rare because so often authors don’t get much say, if any, in their cover art, but I still didn’t know what to expect. Yet when I saw it, I adored my cover. How could there be any other cover for A MURDER OF MAGPIES? The design brings in details like the cobblestone roads of the book’s setting, Black Orchard, Wisconsin. I could imagine walking down that road in the fog and knowing someone was watching. The antique-style light plays off Vayda’s family’s business in the antiques trade as well as her ability to take emotion and turn it into electricity. Then the bird . . . I love the bird’s position as it is hunched over to peck at the ground as if uncovering a secret, and this is a story where everyone has secrets.

About Nicole:
My name is Ashley Nicole Conway, though I only write under my middle name. I’m originally from North Alabama, though at present I am living in Valdosta, Georgia. I attended Auburn University and earned a BA in English with a concentration in Classics and Mythology. I’m happily married to a USAF fighter pilot, so we move fairly frequently. Challenges of writing book two
It was definitely a bit of a challenge to write book two of Gabriel Stone, albeit a fun challenge. When writing a sequel, it’s important to try to write it as though somebody could be reading it without having read book one. So you want to get enough info in there so the particular reader isn’t lost, but also not have too much backstory that it gets boring of course.
Also, finishing off this series was bittersweet. I absolutely loved writing the characters again. It really does feel like meeting up with old friends and hanging out. So cool. But it was also sad to write the ending and say good-bye to those guys. I’ll always love those characters so much.

ACCUSED: A Retaliation Novel #2 Tour & Giveaway

I hear parts of a story in my head, through dreams or fleeting thoughts. After I initially hear parts of a story in my head, I conduct research on the topic itself. All of my young adult books have a serious issue that pulls the reader through the story. In the case of my latest book Accused, I dealt with both sexual assault and an innocent person being falsely accused. In researching sexual assaults and the use of date rape drugs, I scoured newspapers, magazines, and internet articles dealing with the subject. I was absolutely devastated when I discovered victims who do not go to the hospital immediately after being given a date rape drug will likely have no evidence in their system 8 hours later. Most victims, however, aren’t going to the hospital within 8 hours because they don’t know they have been drugged. In addition, most women won’t know who gave them the drug and will not know who attacked them and therefore, won’t be able to identify their attacker. This information really motivated me to write Accused. Young women attending college who accept drinks from people are putting themselves at risk and it’s important for them to know that.
It was pretty easy to research incidents where people were falsely accused. The key for me was to present accusations in a present day electronic / social media time frame. Before Ahmed could get to the police station, people on campus already knew that he had been arrested and many assumed that he was guilty. The time that it takes to send a text message is how fast a rumor spreads through a school or university. It was important for me to show how electronic images, social media photos, and text messages can be cut and pasted together to make a person appear guilty when they were completely innocent of the crime.
To further make the book realistic, I read extensive case histories on sociopaths in creating Brandon Royal’s character. I wanted Brandon to accurately portray a sociopath. In gathering the data on sociopaths, I was most surprised by the level of charm that sociopaths exude without much effort. It’s almost as if a sociopath can reel you in without really trying. Because of my research on sexual assault, I wanted to write a book where young women could see that an attractive, charming guy could be the same guy who is using the date rape drug.
It’s not easy to take on topics like sexual assault, the use of date rape drugs, and sociopaths. However, I believe if I do my homework and set the tone, the characters and the circumstances just right, the book will not only entertain someone, it might just save someone’s life.

I dabble in the black arts of light and shadow… err mmm… photography, I mean. I am also in great excess of 18 years old. I am a nurse and constantly getting in trouble because I refuse to live in a box of preconceptions of other people of how things are suppose to be. And let me tell you, nursing is dominated with “tradition” and “sacred cows“, as any nurse and nursing student will tell you. I love spaghetti, chocolate ice cream, coffee and of course, books!
