About Random In Death:

In the new crime thriller from #1 New York Times-bestselling J.D. Robb, a small and easily concealed weapon wreaks havoc, and the killer is just a face in the crowd.

Jenna’s parents had finally given in, and there she was, at a New York club with her best friends, watching the legendary band Avenue A, carrying her demo in hopes of slipping it to the guitarist, Jake Kincade. Then, from the stage, Jake catches her eye, and smiles. It’s the best night of her life.
It’s the last night of her life.

Minutes later, Jake’s in the alley getting some fresh air, and the girl from the dance floor comes stumbling out, sick and confused and deathly pale. He tries to help, but it’s no use. He doesn’t know that someone in the crowd has jabbed her with a needle — and when his girlfriend Nadine arrives, she knows the only thing left to do for the girl is call her friend, Lieutenant Eve Dallas.

After everyone on the scene is interviewed, lab results show a toxic mix of substances in the victim’s body — and for an extra touch of viciousness, the needle was teeming with infectious agents. Dallas searches for a pattern: Had any boys been harassing Jenna? Was she engaging in risky behavior or caught up in something shady? But there are no obvious clues why this levelheaded sixteen-year-old, passionate about her music, would be targeted.

And that worries Dallas. Because if Jenna wasn’t targeted, if she was just the random, unlucky victim of a madman consumed by hatred, there are likely more deaths to come.

My Thoughts:

Wonderful to see Bella again!

I like the way this investigation came together. Bits and pieces of clues from different threads of the investigation came together to provide information to the investigating team that enabled Lt Dallas and her team get the bad guys. Although it is still Lt Eve Dallas who cracked the case. This time around at least the information gathering was a team effort. I like that better than it is just Dallas and Dallas alone who got the killer. Kudos to this book!

As usual Susan Ericksen did a wonderful job of narrating this book!

The Narrator

About Susan Ericksen:

Susan Ericksen is a Renaissance woman. In addition to being an Earphones-winning audiobook narrator and director — she’s a writer, an amateur linguist, an actress, a mother, and a wife. In the 1980s she joined former classmate David Colacci in western Michigan, where he was artistic director for the Hope Summer Repertory Theater. Twenty miles away, a fledgling audiobook publisher called Brilliance was looking for narrators.

Susan has recorded around two hundred audiobooks for Brilliance, BBC Audiobooks, Tantor, and Hachette. “It was a natural step. As repertory theater actors, the whole point is to be able to do Shakespeare one night, a musical the next night, and Noel Coward the next. So you have multiple personalities and multiple character voices and physicalities. These are such valuable skills for doing audiobooks.”

SHADOWS IN DEATH by JD Robb (UK cover)

Review:

The bad news is, that there is no Bella. The good news is that the staying power of JD Robb‘s story telling quality is still going strong!

The readers are told exactly who the perpetrators are, right at the outset. So this book is not so much as looking for who the murderer is, but, how the investigation was carried out to bring down the murderers with side stories on the way, like, Roarke‘s past coming to the fore.

I probably have said everything I have to say about this book in my reviews of previous books in this series. However, that doesn’t make it any less true that the story telling quality is compelling. The character development is wonderful. The world building is beautiful! 51 books down the line and I am still a fan! Even though Shadows In Death is not the greatest book in the series, it is still an enjoyable read!

About Festive In Death:

Personal trainer Trey Ziegler was in peak physical condition. If you didn’t count the kitchen knife in his well-toned chest.

Lieutenant Eve Dallas soon discovers a lineup of women who were loved and left by the narcissistic gym rat. While Dallas sorts through the list of Ziegler’s enemies, she’s also dealing with her Christmas shopping list — plus the guest list for her and her billionaire husband’s upcoming holiday bash.

Feeling less than festive, Dallas tries to put aside her distaste for the victim and solve the mystery of his death. There are just a few investigating days left before Christmas, and as New Year’s 2061 approaches, this homicide cop is resolved to stop a cold-blooded killer.

Re-Read Review:

I love that this book opens with Trina, who Dallas fear with something close to a phobia! What does that say for my psyche? Yeah, I know, sucker for a teddy bear!

As the title “Festive” denotes, this In Death episode centers around the holiday season, and Dallas does not like Christmases much! It is fun to see her squirm! Sadistic much?!

Another reason that this book is my favourite in the series, is because it is not only Lt. Eve Dallas who knows who the killer is. But it turns out that her favorite suspect is not it after all, which is a deviation from the usual pattern in these books. Kudos to this installment!

Susan Ericksen sound like she sort of have a cold with this book. I could hear the thickened sinuses. But, she still reads with her usual gomp. Blocked nose or not, Susan Ericksen is still a star narrator.

Genre: scifi crime fiction

About Forgotten In Death:

In the latest novel in the #1 New York Times bestselling series, homicide detective Eve Dallas sifts through the wreckage of the past to find a killer.

The body was left in a dumpster like so much trash, the victim a woman of no fixed address, known for offering paper flowers in return for spare change — and for keeping the cops informed of any infractions she witnessed on the street. But the notebook where she scribbled her intel on litterers and other such offenders is nowhere to be found.

Then Eve is summoned away to a nearby building site to view more remains — in this case decades old, adorned with gold jewelry and fine clothing — unearthed by recent construction work. She isn’t happy when she realizes that the scene of the crime belongs to her husband, Roarke — not that it should surprise her, since the Irish billionaire owns a good chunk of New York. Now Eve must enter a complex world of real estate development, family history, shady deals, and shocking secrets to find justice for two women whose lives were thrown away…

FORGOTTEN IN DEATH by JD Robb

Narrative Review:

I was hoping that we would see more of Bella in this installment seeing we did not see much of her in the last book! and we had a very tiny And brief glimpse of her at the start and then nothing! Not enough to feed the Bella addiction!!

This book made me cry in true Nora Roberts fashion! Broke my heart, it did!!

I complained with previous books that only Lt. Eve Dallas ever knows who the perpetrator is right from the start. It is sort of, not true this time. The perpetrator(s) were actually found out only at the end. I like that a whole lot better than “only-Dallas-ever-knows-who-the-perpetrator-is” routine.

I am hoping that Jamal Dell, his brother and cousins will show up again in subsequent books. I agree with Roarke, they are entertaining, enterprising, and interesting characters.

Faithless In Death by JD Robb

Genre: scifi crime fiction

About Faithless In Death:

In the new Eve Dallas police thriller from #1 New York Times-bestselling author J. D. Robb, what looked like a lover’s quarrel turned fatal has larger — and more terrifying — motives behind it…

The scene in the West Village studio appears to be classic crime-of-passion: two wine glasses by the bed, music playing, and a young sculptor named Ariel Byrd with the back of her head bashed in. But when Dallas tracks down the wealthy Upper East Side woman who called 911, the details don’t add up. Gwen Huffman is wealthy, elegant, comforted by her handsome fiancé as she sheds tears over the trauma of finding the body — but why did it take an hour to report it? And why is she lying about little things?

As Eve and her team look into Gwen, her past, and the people around her, they find that the lies are about more than murder. As with sculpture, they need to chip away at the layers of deception to find the shape within — and soon they’re getting the FBI involved in a case that involves a sinister, fanatical group and a stunning criminal conspiracy.

FAITHLESS IN DEATH by JD Robb

Re-Read/Listen Review:

This is another typical only Lt. Dallas knows who the perpetrator is kinda book. That is a little tiring. But, this being a JD Robb book, it is still a good read.

As I was listening to Peabody working on her PPC to run Merit Andrew Caine, in Dallas‘s DLE Urban while Dallas drove on the way to Cop Central, Samsung’s GalaxyZ Fold3 5G came to mind. This story is supposed to be futuristic. Science fiction. When the first book in this series came out in 1995, it was futuristic enough. Now, though, it does not feel futuristic anymore. It feels contemporary. The PPC is here. The science is no longer fiction.

Susan Ericksen is as wonderful as ever!

About Connections In Death:

Homicide cop Eve Dallas and her billionaire husband, Roarke, are building a brand-new school and youth shelter. They know that the hard life can lead kids toward dangerous crossroads — and with this new project, they hope to nudge a few more of them onto the right path. For expert help, they hire child psychologist Dr. Rochelle Pickering — whose own brother pulled himself out of a spiral of addiction and crime with Rochelle’s support.

Lyle is living with Rochelle while he gets his life together, and he’s thrilled to hear about his sister’s new job offer. But within hours, triumph is followed by tragedy. Returning from a celebratory dinner with her boyfriend, she finds Lyle dead with a syringe in his lap, and Eve’s investigation confirms that this wasn’t just another OD. After all his work to get clean, Lyle’s been pumped full of poison — and a neighbor with a peephole reports seeing a scruffy, pink-haired girl fleeing the scene.

Now Eve and Roarke must venture into the gang territory where Lyle used to run, and the ugly underground world of tattoo parlors and strip joints where everyone has taken a wrong turn somewhere. They both believe in giving people a second chance. Maybe even a third or fourth. But as far as they’re concerned, whoever gave the order on Lyle Pickering’s murder has run out of chances…

LEVERAGE IN DEATH by JD Robb

My Thoughts:

After all these years I am still a fan of this series, lows and highs and all. We didn’t see any Bella in this book, which is a disappointment… I’ve also been waiting to see who got the facefull of blue dye, the chocolate thief finally revealed, in this book. But the only mention of it is when Roarke gave Eve some chocolates and she suspected it was her stash. I hope it gets mentioned in the next book.

This instalment of the In Death series, it is not a “big bang” kind of story like the Icove Agenda. But more of a soft, everyday policing kinda feel, but still has very good outcome for society.

I’ve been noticing lately that the last few books in this series has Roarke getting involved with Eve‘s work more and more. In this book, he is beside her almost all the time now. Not that I am complaining. It is just getting me worried that this might not be good for the series. Hopefully, I am worrying for nothing. JD Robb is an accomplished writer after all…

About Golden In Death:

In the latest thriller in the #1 New York Times bestselling series, homicide detective Eve Dallas investigates a murder with a mysterious motive ― and a terrifying weapon.

Pediatrician Kent Abner received the package on a beautiful April morning. Inside was a cheap trinket, a golden egg that could be opened into two halves. When he pried it apart, highly toxic airborne fumes entered his body ― and killed him.

After Eve Dallas calls the hazmat team ― and undergoes testing to reassure both her and her husband that she hasn’t been exposed ― it’s time to look into Dr. Abner’s past and relationships. Not every victim Eve encounters is an angel, but it seems that Abner came pretty close ― though he did ruffle some feathers over the years by taking stands for the weak and defenseless. While the lab tries to identify the deadly toxin, Eve hunts for the sender. But when someone else dies in the same grisly manner, it becomes clear that she’s dealing with either a madman ― or someone who has a hidden and elusive connection to both victims.

GOLDEN IN DEATH by JD Robb audiobook

Narrative:

Book 50 in the series. So that’s what, at least 25 years running? Have you ever heard of such a thing? I haven’t either, except this one. And I’m still a fan. However, by now, it is not as exciting as I seem to remember it to be donkey’s years ago. Still, books in this series are an auto-buy and pre-ordered. And loving every single one of them. Even those I rated not so high. Now why is that?? I can only say that it gotta be the way the author tells a story. JD Robb is a masterful story teller. My greatest regret with this book is that I did not get to see Bella! Now, that one is a bit of a downer. However, it looks like we are getting two Bellas in the succeeding books, yay!! We’ll see how bad-ass Dallas holds up to two sets of those big blue eyes and quivery lips!

LEVERAGE IN DEATH by JD Robb

My Thoughts:

I am totally blaming my 2009 Book Bloggers Holiday Book Swap secret santa for giving me Naked In Death which started me off to become a fan of this series. And I have been a fan for a very long time… however, 47 books down the line and it is eventually starting to wane on me. But, still interested enough to buy it for the foreseeable future though… wane or not. At this point, I believe that I have said everything I have to say about this series, and this book is no different from the rest of the series. Well, other than that I feel that it’s staying power is starting to wane, just a little bit. I am also happy to see a little bit of Bella. I wish that JD Robb would give us a little bigger chunks of her in the future books! She is a bright spot any day! I think it is also good that there is only one or two books per year for this series. It is just enough time to make fans miss the characters like old friends but not enough to get bored of it totally yet. Another great installment in the In Death series!

DARK IN DEATH by JD Robb (UK)

My Thoughts:

This is a short sweet instalment in the In Death series. Plot follows the same pattern as the full length books, just shorter story. So no room for twists. Quiet straightforward, but still enjoyable. In fact I like this better than Dark In Death which started to feel boring to me. It might be the book or might be just me reading too many JD Robb books. And I guess because it is not just Dallas alone knowing who the bad guy is intuitively. Although the supernatural element is stronger in this story than in full novels, like all short stories in this series tends to be, it is still good to read that it is not just Dallas alone who knows the plot. That kind where only she knows, kinds of gets old fast. So even though this is just a short story in the series, I would still rate this book a five.

She calls herself Lady Justice. And once she has chosen a man as her target, she turns herself into a tall blonde or a curvaceous redhead, makes herself as alluring and seductive as possible to them. Once they are in her grasp, they are powerless.

The first victim is wealthy businessman Nigel McEnroy. His company’s human resources department has already paid out settlements to a couple of his young victims — but they don’t know that his crimes go far beyond workplace harassment. Lady Justice knows. And in one shocking night of brutality, she makes him pay a much steeper price.

Now Eve Dallas and her husband, Roarke, are combing through the evidence of McEnroy’s secret life. His compulsive need to record his misdeeds provides them with a wide range of suspects, but the true identity of Lady Justice remains elusive. It’s a challenging case, made even more difficult by McEnroy’s widow, who reacts to the investigation with fury, denial, and threats. Meanwhile, Lady Justice’s criminal crusade is escalating rapidly, and if Eve can’t stop this vigilante, there’s no telling how much blood may be spilled…

Vendetta In Death by JD Robb (UK cover audiobook)

My Thoughts:

Crazy is as crazy gets.
That is what this book is all about.

This installment is quite predictable. A few chapters in and we know who dunnit. But despite that, JD Robb has a way of telling a story that makes reading the book enjoyable anyway. Annddd… I got my little dose of Bella! It was short and sweet, but I still had it, none-the-less. So, this series is now starting to get the “same old, same old” feel. However, becasue one gets a year to wait for the next book, that feeling fades by the time the next installment is published and I wanted to read about the characters again like meeting old friends. Thus I remain a fan of this series.
