The Book

Caress Of Darkness by Julie Kenner
A Dark Pleasures Novella of the 1001 Dark Nights series
Genre: adult urban fantasy

About Caress Of Darkness:

From the first moment I saw him, I knew that Rainer Engel was like no other man. Dangerously sexy and darkly mysterious, he both enticed me and terrified me.

I wanted to run–to fight against the heat that was building between us–but there was nowhere to go. I needed his help as much as I needed his touch. And so help me, I knew that I would do anything he asked in order to have both.

But even as our passion burned hot, the secrets in Raine’s past reached out to destroy us … and we would both have to make the greatest sacrifice to find a love that would last forever.

Excerpt:

He wanted her.

When you got right down to it, that was the bottom line.  Raine wanted Callie Sinclair.  Craved her.  Hungered for her.

Hell, he fucking yearned for her, and that was simply not a feeling he was used to having.  Hadn’t been for a very, very long time.

Oh, sure, he’d gotten off often enough.  Lost himself in a women.  In the feel of her body against his. There was power in the claiming of a willing female, in that hard, rough ride that erased the world, at least for those few singular moments as the sensation built and climax approached.

And when the inevitable explosion came, he’d lose himself in the sharp oblivion that mimicked the death he sought again and again, and yet this death was forged in pleasure and not pain.
But that was all he wanted or needed—just that physical connection to remind him that no matter how dead he might feel on the inside—no matter how hard he chased that escape and no matter how many times he burned—this body still functioned and he still had a job to do.

Because if he could fuck, then he could fucking well survive another day, another year, another century.

Shit.

He ran his fingers over his close-cropped hair and told himself to get a grip. An ironic lecture since he stood like a criminal in the shadows across the street from Sinclair’s Antiques, his eyes trained on the now-locked door.

Thank goodness he’d dismissed Dennis, Phoenix Security’s driver, telling him to go ahead and simply be on call in case Raine needed him later. He hardly wanted to explain to the eager twenty-three year old why the hell he was standing like an idiot, waiting for just another glimpse of this women who’d gotten so deep under his skin.

Christ, he was pathetic. For millennia he’d not been distracted by a woman. Not since he’d lost Livia, his mate.

Oh, he’d fucked plenty, but that was to escape.  Because even after all these centuries he still craved what he’d lost when she’d been ripped from him.

He’d loved her beyond all reckoning, and never once had he believed that he would ever feel that same connection with another female.

And yet this woman — Sinclair’s daughter — not only caught his attention, but sparked his awareness.

He told himself that he was simply attracted to her beauty.  That he hadn’t brought a woman into his bed for over a year.  A short time for a man such as him, but still too damn long.

He told himself that he just wanted to fuck her—but that wasn’t true at all.

He wanted to know her.  He wanted to protect her.

He wanted have her.

And that’s why he was standing here in the dark.

That’s why he was watching her door.

And that’s why the moment she left the building, he was going to follow her—all the way to wherever the hell that might lead.

Therese Walsh’s poignant and mesmerizing novel is a moving tale of family, love, and the power of stories. Jazz, logical and forward-thinking, decides to get a new job, but spirited, strong-willed Olivia, who can see sounds, taste words, and smell sights, is determined to travel to the remote setting of their mother’s unfinished novel to say her final goodbyes and lay their mother’s spirit to rest.

Reviews

Therese Walsh has done it again. She is fast becoming known for delivering lush, emotional and deeply atmospheric reads that never disappoint. Her second book, The Moon Sisters, is a magical journey of grief, hope and the power of family bonds. It is a novel for the senses, a harmony of sounds, sights, scents and tastes, the likes of which you have never experienced before. You won’t want to miss this one.”
Sarah Addison Allen, New York Times bestselling author of Lost Lake

Library Journal, STARRED REVIEW

Walsh’s second novel (after The Last Will of Moira Leahy) is a story of sisters Jazz and Olivia, who take separate but winding paths toward moving on with their lives after their mother’s suicide. Jazz, older and angry, decides to plunge into a new job while Olivia, who can see sounds and taste words, runs away to the remote setting of her mother’s unfinished novel. Jazz follows, determined to drag her younger sister home, only to be met with more roadblocks as Olivia attaches herself to a train-hopper who insists he can’t be trusted. Tension between the siblings mounts on the way to their destination as each sister is hiding secrets about their mother. VERDICT Walsh has written a beautiful, lush novel fueled by a fairy-tale journey of grief, love, and will-o’-the-wisps. Fans of coming-of-age novels and magical realism will be drawn in and may never want to leave.

Booklist, STARRED REVIEW

Jazz and Olivia Moon are about as different as sisters can be. The death of their mother, which appears to have been a suicide, hits them both hard, but their reactions are completely opposite. Practical, 22-year-old Jazz gets a job at the funeral home that handled their mother’s funeral, while dreamy 18-year-old Olivia half blinds herself by staring at the sun and decides to visit a bog to catch sight of the wisps that her mother talked and wrote about. Accompanied by reluctant Jazz, Olivia sets off, but when the bus they’re driving breaks down, Olivia makes the rash decision to stow away on a train. There she meets a tattooed, reticent young drifter named Hobbs, who agrees to help her find the wisps. When Jazz catches up with them, she’s immediately put off by Hobbs and furious with Olivia’s refusal to give up her mission or accept that their mother’s death was a suicide. Both heartbreaking and hopeful, the Moon sisters’ journey is no quixotic quest, and readers will find themselves completely immersed in their transformative search. This magical, moving tale is not to be missed.

Publishers Weekly

Walsh’s luminous second novel (after The Last Will of Moira Leahy) examines the disparate emotional and physical journeys undertaken by two sisters from the town of Tramp, W.Va., after their mother’s death. Because Olivia Moon is cursed (or, arguably, blessed) with synesthesia, a condition that causes her to taste sounds and see smells, her mother, Beth, decides to homeschool her. Beth is a dreamer who writes letters to her estranged father that she never mails and works on a fantasy story that she is afraid to finish. Olivia’s no-nonsense older sister, Jazz, is adamant about not following in their mother’s footsteps. When Beth dies from inhaling gas from a stove—whether she does so accidentally or willfully is not known—Olivia sets out on the daylong trip that her mother had planned on making, to a cranberry bog where Beth hoped to see “ghost lights” and be inspired to finish her book. Jazz secretly follows her sister and they end up joining a small group of “train hoppers” who spend their lives riding the rails. Walsh explores how the sisters’ experience of the outside world transforms their views of each other and themselves, in a book packed with invention and rich characterizations.

Books In The Regency London Series:

Connections

I am so excited that my historical novel, A Dangerous Madness, releases today. A Dangerous Madness is set during the Regency period in London, and the plot revolves around the assassination of the British prime minister, Spencer Perceval.

A Dangerous Madness stands alone, but it is also connected to two other of my historical novels, The Emperor’s Conspiracy and Banquet of Lies. The fun part of connecting the novels for me was to revisit characters I love from the previous two books (which are also connected to each other) but introducing those characters so that a reader of A Dangerous Madness doesn’t have to have read the other two books to understand them. The characters have to stand alone, as much as the books do. But for those readers who have read either one or both of the previous books, they’ll see those characters again, and learn a little about what has happened to them since the last book.

I’ve had so many readers contact me and comment on how much they enjoyed catching a glimpse of one or other of their favorite characters, which I really love. And quite a few people who read Banquet of Lies went back to read The Emperor’s Conspiracy, and told me they found it equally satisfying, so readers don’t have to read the books in any particular order.

In this way, connected books are more versatile than a series, because most people are hesitant to read a series out of order, and I totally understand that. I also love that so many people wrote to me after Banquet of Lies, asking if the Duke of Wittaker would get his own story. It was very satisfying to tell them I had started working on it straight after I finished Banquet of Lies. 🙂

From the beginning of Banquet of Lies, the Duke of Wittaker is mentioned by various characters again and again, although readers only ‘meet’ him near the very end. But when he did arrive on the scene, he made a real impact. I wrote and rewrote the scenes with him in them, because he really shone as a character and I wanted to do him justice. I loved that readers felt the same way, and those who read Banquet of Lies and have been waiting for their Duke of Wittaker fix, I hope they enjoy A Dangerous Madness as much as I enjoyed writing it.

About Invitation:

Madison Spencer is a serious medical student, focused only on work and hiding her beauty and her once-passionate spirit behind a quiet plain-Jane facade. Since she was drugged, stripped, assaulted and photographed by a vengeful ex, she has stayed away from men and kept her heart and body safe.

Excerpt:

I can’t even
blame it on the booze. There wasn’t any, or at least there wasn’t any for me. I
was with Chloe, my bodyguard. Okay, actually she was my friend, but a really
overprotective friend who knew all about what I’d been through and wanted to
make sure it never happened again. So, no alcohol.

But, what she
and I hadn’t counted on was him being there. There I was, minding my own
business, putting in my time at the Med School Social, more than ready to head
home for some studying, then Chinese food and a movie. And suddenly, him.

I was
inhaling when I caught sight of him, but my breath just stopped. It felt like
being punched in the chest. I kept telling myself, look away, look away! But it
was impossible. I was paralyzed. His beautiful face and magnificent body were
magnets, and my eyes were locked on them.

I hadn’t felt
this kind of physical attraction since, well, ever. I had never felt like that.
I had stayed away from men for two years. I was pretty much terrified of them,
to tell the truth. But there he was. Unavoidable and irresistible.

I saw him in
profile. Oh, that hair. Thick, almost curly, falling into his eyes. The kind of
hair you need to gently push off of his face right before you kiss him. Or, the
kind of hair you grab really hard right before you’re about to…
But, I’m
getting ahead of myself. The point I’m trying to make is that my mind very
clearly recognized all the dangers ahead and was saying, “Turn around, go, get
out of here! Before it’s too late.” But then he turned around to look right at
me. It was already too late.
We held each
other’s gaze a second longer than politeness required. Something inside me went
click, and for the first time in almost two years, I felt young and alive, and
really, really turned on. Every part of me suddenly woke up, and all the best
parts started to tingle. I was breathing harder. My lips parted slightly,
already begging to be kissed.
It was a
little overwhelming. I was out of practice. No, actually, I had never had the
kind of practice you would need to stay controlled in a situation like that. I
think maybe you can have a soul mate for your mind, and also one for your body.
And my body was saying “Get me over there right now!”
But I was
still too afraid. I smiled a little and turned away.
I had to stay
for a while, to look sociable, so I went over to the food table and stared at
the snacks, which were already stale. Nothing looked very good, and my throat
was too tight to eat anyway.
I was
starting to formulate a plan for escaping without the other students or the
teachers noticing when I felt the air move behind me, the softest caress
against my bare shoulders. Then, a hand on my back, an electric shock to my
body, wildly pleasurable. I gasped and spun around. Right into the arms of…
“I’m Liam.”
Liam. Right into the arms of Liam. Oh, he was even
more beautiful up close. My hand rose all on its own to push that wonderful
floppy hair from his face. I stopped suddenly, embarrassed, but he caught my
wrist, and held my palm gently to his face. We looked at each other and knew.
“Wanna get
out of here?” he asked, and of course, foolish, foolish woman that I am, I
said, “Yes.”
I saw him my first day at the new
hospital. I’m a medical student and had just finished the lecture part of
things where we sit around learning about chemical reactions and body parts.
That was over, at last, and we were moving on to seeing real live patients in
the hospital.
The
orientation was step one in getting us ready for our new roles. We each got a
short lab coat and a tour of the locker rooms. We received our ID tag photos.
I’m not sure
why I first noticed Liam.
Since the bad
thing happened, I keep my head down and make eye contact with pretty much
nobody. I wear my hair in a tight bun at the nape of my neck and my clothes are
dull and loose. On that particular day, I was trying very hard to concentrate.
I was excited to be starting work in the hospital, but I was mostly terrified.
There was so much to take in and remember. My head was reeling after only two
hours. The last thing on my mind was men. So, who knows why I took that second
look as he walked by our group.
Well,
actually I do know why. He was gorgeous. Ridiculously gorgeous. Dark wavy hair,
just slightly overgrown so he looked like a happy surfer who’d tumbled out of
bed. Smiling eyes. Sparkling, mischievous, movie star eyes. A little bit of
stubble, likely because he had been on call all night. The rest of him looked
pretty much immaculate. He wore light wool pants and a sky blue shirt. No tie,
but the white lab coat made him look professional enough.
I was
dedicated to maintaining my nun-like lifestyle, but, seriously, it was impossible
not to look at him. Even Chloe noticed him. She looked at him, then at me. She
shook her head lightly and whispered, “No”. I laughed a little because she
sounded like a mom telling a toddler that she couldn’t have any candy. Well,
that was pretty much what was happening, so I guess Chloe nailed that.
She was
absolutely right. I didn’t want any trouble. Certainly not that awful,
frightening feeling of falling in love. No time-consuming romance. And
certainly not all the time I had lost trying to recover from the trauma of what
had happened before. Even a plain old tiny heartbreak could set me back, and
put me way off course in my career.
No, I didn’t
have the time or energy for any distractions. Nothing. Just work and school.
So I ignored the stunning resident with
the black hair, and tried to focus on the tall blond giving us the orientation
spiel. This was much easier because I felt no attraction to him at all. He was
really handsome, too. But something about him seemed mean. Or maybe arrogant. It’s
hard to remember what I thought of him that first time, because the memory is
so clouded with all that came after. I’ll just say he was a tall, slim blond
who should have caught my eye, but didn’t.

The inspiration for The Golden Apple

The Golden Apple is loosely based on the Norwegian fairy tale The Princess on the Glass Hill. The original tale is more about the hero than the heroine, and it is a very straightforward quest story, with the hero becoming more and more accomplished, until at last he succeeds against the odds. But there were a few things in this fairy tale that stood out for me and made me take notice. The first is the very unusual situation of the king holding a contest for his daughter’s hand by putting her on top of a glass hill with a golden apple in her lap. Knights from all over are invited to race a horse up the smooth glass sides of the mountain and the one who can pluck the golden apple from the princess’s lap wins her hand and is heir to the kingdom. As usual in fairy tales, there is no explanation as to how the king came by a glass mountain, but I wondered where he got it, and that sparked the starting point of the story. It is really the inciting incident that starts the story off, rather than the focus of the story, as it was in the fairy tale.

Secondly, the crux of the tale, for me, is that the hero cannot win the princess’s hand without help from the princess herself. That part of the original tale is one or two lines long, but for me, it’s fascinating. The feminine power determining and choosing which masculine power will prevail. This really made me interested, because the princess doesn’t just sit there and take whoever it is manages to accomplish the (impossible) task set by her father, but actively chooses who it is she wants to win and helps them. I wanted to write a story about the consequences of her taking that power and using it and The Golden Apple was the result — far, far more heroine-centric than the original, and I really had fun with it.

Though they see things very differently, Jazz is forced by her sense of duty to help Olivia reach her goal. Bitter and frustrated by the attention heaped on her sunny sister whose world is so unique, Jazz is even more upset when they run into trouble along the way and Olivia latches to a worldly train-hopper. Though Hobbs warns Olivia that he’s a thief who shouldn’t be trusted, he agrees to help with their journey. As they near their destination, the tension builds between the two sisters, each hiding something from the other, and they will finally be forced to face everything between them and decide what is really important.

“Both heartbreaking and hopeful, the Moon sisters’ journey is no quixotic quest, and readers will find themselves completely immersed in their transformative search. This magical, moving tale is not to be missed.”

GET TEMPTED Book Blitz

You have written a lot of romance books, what attracts you to this genre? Do you also read a lot of romance books?

I love everything about romance. From Romanticism in art and the way it privileges strong emotions as an aesthetic, to the way romantic love is the foundation for marriage and family. My home is full of romantic paintings, I can quote the Romantic poets (“A thing of beauty is a joy forever!”) and I put a lot of hard work into my personal HEA. But then, I’m a sensitive, emotional sort of person. The first romance I ever read was probably Wuthering Heights, although it certainly wouldn’t qualify as a romance novel. Mixed in with the more literary romances I came across as a teen were also a few Silhouette books that I adored. I still love both kinds of romances.

Today, I don’t read nearly as much as I would like to, but that’s the mixed blessing of being a writer. My days are still spent with words, but I’m writing them! Still, I read as much as I possibly can because I enjoy our genre tremendously.

About Learning Curves:

Sociology scholar Madeline Watson can’t wait to undertake the study of human mating rituals for her dissertation. Too bad the university thinks upstanding Madeline has spent too much time in the ivory tower to undertake such an earthy subject. Now she needs to shed her good girl image in a hurry, and she knows just the man to help her.

Mechanic-turned-business mogul Cal Turner might teach part time at the university, but he’s definitely not ready to provide the proper Miss Watson with the kind of lessons she’s looking for. Besides, despite his long-standing reputation as a rebel, Cal is ready to turn his life around now that guardianship of his younger sister is on the line.

Once Maddy decides to turn herself into bad girl extraordinaire, Cal has no choice but put out the fire in her wake. Will he be able to bring her to her senses, or will he get caught up in the blaze along with her?

Learning Curves Excerpt:

…For the first time since he’d picked Maddy up at her doorstep, Cal allowed his gaze to travel slowly up her legs and over her curves in the dim lights from over the garage’s reception desk. The professor wanted love lessons?
Well, by God, he’d do his best to make sure he taught her well before she found herself another tutor. No way would he let this sweet woman fall into the hands of some slam-bam-thank you-ma’am clod.

She flashed him her “A plus” grin, making his mouth go dry as chalk dust. Her faith in him was a bracing reminder that this woman wasn’t just another fling. No matter how scientifically professor Maddy approached this business of seduction, nothing would ever be the same between them after tonight. He had to make their time together something she would never, ever forget.

“What about tonight’s lesson in seduction?” He had been wanting to touch her for four years. He didn’t think he could wait for her any longer.

At the door, she paused. She looked up at him with her most infectious bad girl grin. “I’ve decided there would be nothing more seductive than to learn among pink bubbles.”

Oh, God. Where on earth did little Miss Innocent come up with erotic ideas like this? He waited for a moment, trying to envision how he could accommodate her without getting them both killed by twirling brushes.

“Please?”

Her soft request undid him, made him ready to slay dragons or heavy car wash equipment if need be. He leaned over her, powerless to keep his hands off her another minute.

Her eyes closed when his hand brushed around her waist, tangling in the length of her silky brown hair. She slid slender arms around his neck. Cal braced himself on the glass door behind her, the thrum of the machines vibrating though the barrier and up his arms to shake his whole world.

Her lips tilted toward him. He wanted nothing more than to accept that tempting offer and lose himself in her kiss, but first he would make sure this was one lesson she’d never forget. He scooped her off her feet, into his arms and backed them through the service door…

Revealed Excerpt:

Jackie started to panic when her tail fell off for the third time. Thank God for duct tape or her fuzzy pants could have well been down around her ankles before she danced her way into the restaurant.

She finished her costume adjustments and smoothed her glued-on whiskers just as the elevator doors slid open. Careful not to tread on her ailing tail, she stepped into the penthouse level eatery of a downtown Boston brownstone. Now all she needed to do was locate the birthday boy, sing her telegram song, and then she could reclaim her Friday night as her own.

So what if her stint as a singing telegram wasn’t exactly rocket science? It paid more than her daytime work as a copywriter. Both jobs were only a means to an end anyway. She was prepared to abide a few sacrifices to achieve her dream of being a composing children’s music.

Besides, there was a certain nobility in any job that involved making people happy. A nobility that could scarcely be diminished by the kitty ears perched on her head.
The squeak of her tennis shoes on the polished wooden floor resounded throughout the dining area. Patrons paused between bites of mozzarella sticks and greasy chicken wings to note the cat woman strolling in their midst.

Not that Jackie cared.

But then, she’d been causing too much commotion all of her life. There was the time she decided to sing the elements of the periodic table for her science fair project. Sure she’d ruffled the feathers of all the kids who’d made robots, but she’d taken second place at the state competition. Then, just last week she’d gone out on a limb at a singing audition by transforming a rendition of a melodic herbal store jingle into a semi-tuneful Tarzan-inspired jungle cry.

Jackie was no stranger to turning heads. Or taking risks. Sometimes they paid off, like the science fair victory. Sometimes they landed her back on the pavement singing telegrams, as last week’s unsuccessful audition proved.

Still, she wondered how she’d gotten suckered into this last minute singing assignment when all she’d wanted to do tonight was recharge her creative batteries and develop some new song concepts. She’d had an idea rattling around in her brain– some rough lyrics for a new diet soda commercial she would polish and put on her demo tape. But the Zing-O-Gram office temp had sounded so desperate when she’d called, Jackie had no choice but to cover tonight’s late breaking gig.

Just her luck, she had to be the only Zing-O-Gram employee on call without a date lined up for a Friday night. Nothing new there. Sure she had plenty of offers. Heck, the cat get-up on its own could usually elicit a few dinner invitations in the course of an evening.

But never from the right sort of guys. Jackie wanted a man who knew how to have a good time— someone who cared more about following his heart and his dreams than the Almighty Buck. Boston was full of gorgeous men, but they all seemed to be on a relentless career fast track that Jackie refused to enter.

Too bad.

She would locate Gregory the birthday boy, sing him a cute song for his special day, and be on her way back to her solo Friday night. She’d be fine without a man in her life, and she’d be fine getting through tonight’s performance.

Assuming she didn’t burst a seam on this two sizes too small cat costume first.

Jackie took slow, shallow breaths to ensure the black fuzzy suit stayed in place. She could handle this as long as she kept her song in a manageable octave. Those high notes had been known to strain even the best of seams– she sure as heck wasn’t about to try shattering any glass outfitted in this feline shrink-wrap. She’d just keep the tune in a comfortable range and she’d have no problem staying in her garb.

She was singing a simple ditty at a birthday party for a six-year old boy. What could possibly go wrong?

Tall, Dark and Daring Excerpt:

“So you’ll take a truth over a dare?” Ines asked Tessa, crossing her braceleted arms.

“Any day.” Tessa would much rather reveal some inane secret of her past than sing a chorus of “It’s Raining Men” out on the South Beach strip.

How much trouble could she get in with a simple game over drinks with her girlfriend?

Ines smiled. “Remember, you have to tell the truth.”

Tessa sighed. “I hope you don’t expect me to cross my heart and stick a needle in my eye and all that.”

“I trust you. You still want to take the truth?”

“Sometime today. Yes.” Tessa stared down at her empty ring finger where Rob’s engagement diamond had rested just this morning.

“Are you still in love with Mitch Ryder?”

The name blasted away all thoughts of Rob and his ring.

Mitch Ryder. The first man she’d ever been with. The man she couldn’t help but compare all others to.

The wretch who’d ditched her to travel the world with a snowboarding team.

Her foggy brain realized she was taking too long to answer. “What kind of question is that?”

“It’s the kind I want an answer to,” Ines replied as she waved away their waiter.

“I can’t answer that,” Tessa returned, indignant on her own behalf. “That was eight years ago!” She waved the waiter back and ordered another round. She refused to make this a night of sappy regrets.

Ines leaned across the table when their server left. “Then you have to take a double dare.”

“Fine.” She was too annoyed to care about the consequences of a double dare.

Of course, she most certainly was not still hung up on Mitch Ryder. She’d had one husband and one fiancé since then, so how could she be? The point was, she just didn’t want to discuss Mitch with anyone.

Especially not with Ines who could pry confessions from a priest if given half a chance. Besides, Tessa knew she might harbor just a little affection for the guy– even if he had walked away from the hottest affair ever to scorch across the Northeast.

“Are you sure you don’t want to just answer the question?” Ines prodded.

The next round of drinks arrived, and Tessa raised her shot glass full of jiggling cherry alcohol in mock salute. “That chapter of my life is closed and I’m not talking, so bring on the double dare, girlfriend. I’m ready.”

Ines retrieved her purse from the floor and pulled out a manila file folder with the Westwood Marketing seal on one corner. “Then I’d like to reopen the book, so to speak.” She passed the file to Tessa.

A business dare? It was unlike Ines to challenge her with something so mundane, and something Tessa would actually enjoy. Tessa loved a good test of her marketing skills.

Curious, she opened the file and stared down at the business name on the cover sheet.

Mogul Ryders Snowboards.

Proprietor: Mitch Ryder.

“Meet your new client, Tessa. I’m sending you to the beautiful Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York for your last week on the job.” Ines sipped her wine as calmly as if she’d just announced she’d decided to paint her bathroom. “I hear there’s lots of snow on the ground.”

“What?” Tessa’s heart kicked up a rhythm so fast her blood outpaced the salsa music. Ines expected her to go back to the scene of her long ago affair and work with the man who’d turned her world upside down? “That’s not a double dare, Ines, that’s blackmail!”

“You are right that’s not a double dare, querida. That’s just the first part.”

“There’s more?” The file folder fell closed in her hand as Tessa waited for the other shoe to drop. She suspected the bunny hop would be a walk in the park compared to whatever torture Ines had cooked up.

“Si.” Ines’s self-satisfied grin revealed every tooth. “I dare you to stay out of his bed for the whole week, Tessa.”

A week? Last time she hadn’t been able to stay out of his bed for three days. The man was a walking aphrodisiac.

And somehow, Tessa had the feeling she’d just agreed to a lethal dose.

One Naughty Night Excerpt:

…Renzo could not, should not, would not, get any more involved with Esme. The whole charade had been ill conceived and it would be least embarrassing for all parties concerned if he simply said good night to her right now.

Just as soon as he knew she was safely inside her room.

Once they cleared the Moulin Rouge Lounge and hit the bank of elevators, she paused, fishing in her purse.

“I’m on the fourth floor in the Sensualist’s Suite. Maybe I’d better find my key.” She shook her purse as the elevator arrived. Apparently convinced the key lay within the white satin bag, Esme began the search with determination etched on her delicate jaw line.

“The Sensualist’s Suite?” He had no idea why he tortured himself by asking as they stepped inside the elevator.

Maybe because liars deserved to be tortured.

Withdrawing the plastic card from her bag as they soared up to the necessary floor, Esme’s cheeks flushed lightly. “It’s the kind of room that has to be seen to be believed. I had no idea the accommodations here were so…” Her eyes darted about the tiny elevator cabin—outfitted in soft brown suede walls and decorated with a fake leopard print covered bench— as if in search of the right word. Finally, her gaze landed on him. “…so sexy.”

His body twitched in reaction to the word rolling off her tongue. In reaction to their proximity in the quiet privacy of the small space.

The torture had officially begun…

Excerpt from Infinitely Gilded:

I let out a sigh and turned to ask Dash about this afternoon when I found my lips pressed against his. His warm palm cupped my cheek tenderly and I felt myself melting. I distantly heard the retort and protest in my mind but I shooed them away giving in to the passion. I admitted to myself I wanted the taste of his lips on mine, drowning in ecstasy. I bit back the whimper that wanted to escape when he pulled back slightly, catching his breath.

“You don’t play fair,” I breathed.

“No, I don’t. Not when it comes to something I want. Not when it comes to you.” He stared into my eyes and I wanted to cling to him and never let go…

…I could do nothing but play along with the charade while I looked at him and silently asked how far do I have to go to get to you? Hoping I wasn’t making a permanent pronouncement on temporary emotion I knew patience was what I needed but right now it felt like the enemy. A part of me was drawn to him but a part of me resisted. And the resistance was what continued to push me through. I wanted to grab his face and scream at him – why? Slowly I could feel my shattered soul wandering back to me. It was testing its old stomping grounds and satisfied, fell into its original spot. Almost like a test drive, it shifted around in its seat, adjusting the mirrors, pressing a few buttons adjusting the radio and taking it for a spin. ‘It feels the same,’ my soul concluded. ‘Maybe a little more battered and bruised – definitely a fixer upper but it will do.’ And before the warmth of his mouth left mine, the mingling of our breaths becoming separate again I allowed that silly dreamer who still resided within me a fleeting glimpse of forever.
